Christian Science and its Encounter with the Tarot

Christian Science on one hand teaches us about the unreality of what we see with the material senses, and the duality which is to be displaced daily, that which is not real. Our mission is clear, to see ourselves not as WE see ourselves but as God sees us, without blemish, sin sickness or death,  ensuring the Temple is restored and Man has his rightful place as God’s reflection. It is firmly rooted in the Christian tradition, restoring the idea of Christ’s healing from the 1st Century.

The Tarot on the other hand appears to represent the very thing we are trying to displace. It nurtures the little “me”. It shows pictures of sin, death, material love and even the devil appearing to give human form to mortal mental processes. One of the opinions of it also claims to  heal duality. Its roots are shrouded in mystery and has no clear demonstration to speak of except perhaps false hopes for material living. Having said that Mrs Eddy claims the language of Spirit is symbol. The Tarot also lets us see what God sees but more as a spectator at the movies and with a starting point which is not always seen as God.

The question is can Tarot be redeemed as a valid system for exploring consciousness?

Shining Tribe

I have been taking a class on Jewish mysticism, taught by a brilliant man named Robert Micha’el Esformes. He mentioned recently that Hebrew had two words for “why,” one for how things came to be, and the other for what is their reason or purpose. I was so struck by this that I wrote the following short essay.

Thoughts on “Why”
Rachel Pollack

Those of us of a certain age may remember the old-time comic, “Professor” Irwin Corey. Corey would come onstage wearing a shabby, ill-fitting tuxedo and high-top basketball shoes. Then he would spout pompous nonsense.

When he appeared on television, such as the Tonight Show, where he could sit down with the host, they would go through a set routine. Johnny Carson would ask “Why do you wear sneakers?’ The professor would draw himself up and proclaim, “You pose a two-part question! ‘Why?’ has…

As #Religion vanishes…what’s left? #christianscience #mathematics

For those of you in my age group, we have seen major discomfort with the word “Christian”. In the UK, its a bit of a statement and carries so much baggage, its something we hide. In the words of Oscar Wilde, “the only sin is stupidity” and we have seen major abuses and restrictions in the name of God.

Christian Science with all its definitions for Consciousness still remains difficult. I felt particularly upset a few weeks ago trying to explain away the Bible Lesson topic “everlasting punishment” to a friend. It seems so exclusive and unfriendly.

So, as religion including denomination vanishes, what will remain? Well, Mrs Eddy started with a very broad view of her Science, she updated the textbook and released many updated editions before her death. The early ones had quotes from other religions such as Hinduism and Eastern Esotericism.

As she discovered her system more, the Bible became prominent as she discovered the Science and expanded on its idea. No doubt she was searching for Biblical links to her system from the beginning and also noting people were not ready to hear “science”.

It was John Doorly, ex president of the Mother Church, some decades later who noticed that she had written the 7 synonyms in a different order 3 times to explain 3 points and discovered that it matched three periods of Biblical history with the textbook itself representing the 4th period. He then discovered that using her key to the Scriptures, the Bible was a book of spiritual laws written about the demonstration of the 7 synonyms. Thus her system was shown in the mathematical numbers 7 and 4.

The Hebrews recognised the importance of these great numbers, the Torah has the Bereishit. (Genesis 1:1) being 7 words and 28 letters in original Hebrew and regarded as “God”s signature.

In Hebrew, each letter possesses a numerical value, working with this system is called Gematria and is used to explore the relationship between words and ideas.

I’m a bit cynical that either of them “discovered” that, I’m sure that system or framework had been around long before either of them came across it. Mrs Eddy had long been associated with freemasonry they even built a structure to honour her in the early days and one of her husbands was a member. She wrote about herself longing to be associated with them.

So, to make this treatise practical, you will imagine my surprise when I was introduced to a “tarot card” reader a few days ago, or an Intuitive counsellor as she called herself.

Her tool was this: a pack of cards:

22 cards including card 0 which matches 7 +4 and its reflection (11+11)

The further four “suits” can be seen as the four sides of the matrix. They are basically 4 sets of 14 cards so the 7 and its reflection (7+7) presented 4 times

We spoke about it in detail but it gives a clue how mathematics may be used in the future with Art outlining the same synonyms. Right now systems like Tarot cards are not understood mathematically so are lost in mesmerism.

It is likely though something will appear using these same numbers 7 and 4 within our consciousness. After all, these numbers are already all around us in perfection. This is God.
