Soul and Body Bible Lesson. 27 May 2018

Golden Text: I Chronicles 13:12.

12, And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark of God home to me?

Responsive Reading: I Chronicles 16:7-36.

7Then on that day David delivered first this psalm to thank the Lord into the hand of Asaph and his brethren.
8Give thanks unto the Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people.
9Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works.
10Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord.
11Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face continually.
12Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;
13O ye seed of Israel his servant, ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones.
14He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth.
15Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations;
16Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac;
17And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant,
18Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance;the lot: Heb. the cord
19When ye were but few, even a few, and strangers in it.few, even: Heb. men of number, etc.
20And when they went from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people;
21He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes,
22Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.
23Sing unto the Lord, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation.
24Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvellous works among all nations.
25For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods.
26For all the gods of the people are idols: but the Lord made the heavens.
27Glory and honour are in his presence; strength and gladness are in his place.
28Give unto the Lord, ye kindreds of the people, give unto the Lord glory and strength.
29Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
30Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.
31Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: and let men say among the nations, The Lord reigneth.
32Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof: let the fields rejoice, and all that is therein.
33Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the Lord, because he cometh to judge the earth.
34O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.
35And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name, and glory in thy praise.
36Blessed be the Lord God of Israel for ever and ever. And all the people said, Amen, and praised the Lord.

Section 1

The Bible Exodus: 13:17-22.

17And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt:
18But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt.harnessed: or, by five in a rank
19And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you.
20And they took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, in the edge of the wilderness.
21And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:
22He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

S and H P 581 definition of Ark.

Ark. Safety; the idea, or reflection, of Truth, proved to be as immortal as its Principle; the understanding of Spirit, destroying belief in matter.

God and man coexistent and eternal; Science showing that the spiritual realities of all things are created by Him and exist forever. The ark indicates temptation overcome and followed by exaltation.

Section 2.

Judges 14:1

1And Samson went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines.
2And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife.
3Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.pleaseth…: Heb. is right in mine eyes
4But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.
5Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnah, and came to the vineyards of Timnah: and, behold, a young lion roared against him.against…: Heb. in meeting him
6And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
7And he went down, and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well.
8And after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion: and, behold, there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcase of the lion.
9And he took thereof in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they did eat: but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the carcase of the lion.
10So his father went down unto the woman: and Samson made there a feast; for so used the young men to do.
11And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.
12And Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change of garments:sheets: or, shirts
13But if ye cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments. And they said unto him, Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it.sheets: or, shirts
14And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days expound the riddle.
15And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto Samson’s wife, Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s house with fire: have ye called us to take that we have? is it not so?take…: Heb. possess us, or, impoverish us?
16And Samson’s wife wept before him, and said, Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee?
17And she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she lay sore upon him: and she told the riddle to the children of her people.the seven…: or, the rest of the seven days
18And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them, If ye had not plowed with my heifer, ye had not found out my riddle.
19And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and slew thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which expounded the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.spoil: or, apparel
20But Samson’s wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.

S and H 165 1-15.

1 PHYSIOLOGY is one of the apples from “the tree
of knowledge.” Evil declared that eating this fruit
3 would open man’s eyes and make him as a god. Instead
of so doing, it closed the eyes of mortals to man’s Godgiven
dominion over the earth.
6 To measure intellectual capacity by the size of the
brain and strength by the exercise of muscle, is to
subjugate intelligence, to make mind mor9
tal, and to place this so-called mind at the
mercy of material organization and non-intelligent
matter.
12 Obedience to the so-called physical laws of health has
not checked sickness. Diseases have multiplied, since
man-made material theories took the place of spiritual truth

Section 3

Genesis 3:6-9

6And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.pleasant: Heb. a desire
7And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.aprons: or, things to gird about
8And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.cool: Heb. wind
9And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

S and H. 3:17-26.

How empty are our conceptions of Deity! We admit
18 theoretically that God is good, omnipotent, omnipresent,
infinite, and then we try to give
information to this infinite Mind. We plead
21 for unmerited pardon and for a liberal outpouring of
benefactions. Are we really grateful for the good
already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the
24 blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more.
Gratitude is much more than a verbal expression of
thanks. Action expresses more gratitude than speech.

Section 4

Luke 13: 12-17

12And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.
13And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.
14And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.
15The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?
16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?
17And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.

S and H. 443:1-13.

1 WHEN the discoverer of Christian Science is consulted
by her followers as to the propriety, advan3
tage, and consistency of systematic medical
study, she tries to show them that under ordinary
circumstances a resort to faith in corporeal means
6 tends to deter those, who make such a compromise, from
entire confidence in omnipotent Mind as really possessing
all power. While a course of medical study is at times
9 severely condemned by some Scientists, she feels, as she
always has felt, that all are privileged to work out their
own salvation according to their light, and that our motto
12 should be the Master’s counsel, “Judge not, that ye be
not judged

Section 5

1 corinthians 5 11-13

11But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
12For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?
13But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

S and H. 167:1-19.

1 Should we implore a corporeal God to heal the sick
out of His personal volition, or should we understand the
3 infinite divine Principle which heals? If we rise no higher
than blind faith, the Science of healing is not attained, and
Soul-existence, in the place of sense-existence, is not com6
prehended. We apprehend Life in divine Science only
as we live above corporeal sense and correct it. Our proportionate
admission of the claims of good or of evil de9
termines the harmony of our existence, — our health, our
longevity, and our Christianity.
The two masters
We cannot serve two masters nor perceive divine Sci12
ence with the material senses. Drugs and hygiene cannot
successfully usurp the place and power of the
divine source of all health and perfection. If
15 God made man both good and evil, man must remain
thus. What can improve God’s work? Again, an error
in the premise must appear in the conclusion. To have
18 one God and avail yourself of the power of Spirit, you
must love God supremely.

Section 6

Matthew 3 16-17

16And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

S and H. 60:27 to 61:3

27 Science will correct the discord, and teach us
life’s sweeter harmonies.
Soul has infinite resources with which to bless mankind,
30 and happiness would be more readily attained and would
be more secure in our keeping, if sought in Soul. Higher
enjoyments alone can satisfy the cravings of immortal

Mortals and Immortals 6

Coming up to the end of a week, where I didn’t prepare or write a Bible Lesson in advance but daily looked at scripture with Science and Health. Partly because of my increasing discomfort with writing using 19th century religious terms as religion drops out of fashion in the UK and partly to make a stand against institutional denominational demands of “purchasing” a weekly lesson with some bizarre notion of sentimentality.

I also spent this week looking at various numerology systems to see exactly where Mary Baker Eddy got her numerical ideas, which I’ve written about in a blog post a few days ago. It proves to us her Mathematical principle, firmly rooted in Bible numerology, then ordaining it as Pastor along with her own book using the 7,4, principle.

Biblical numerology goes much farther back than the Bible itself, the allegories and stories are really just to demonstrate how they work in our lives. I am in no way saying that we should see CS only as a mathematical formula, (although everything can be seen as mathematics in our lives) but we cant use the practice unless we have a firm grounding in the principle. We don’t need to know how electricity works but we need to know the basics. Without those, it becomes a system of magic of faith.

Her work needs to be seen in light of a government. For Mrs Eddy that Government was to be called Church, giving rise to all kinds of misconceptions about what that means in a world where religious terms have no relevance. Yet her definition can take us far above any human place and straight back to the Bible.

Plato said: A chair or an ox belongs to the class of material things. A soul or a number belongs to the class of immaterial things. The drawing of a square belongs to the material realm but the square itself belongs to the immaterial realm which more or less sums up what she says.

Next week, I hope to continue examining her connection and influences from Plato.

Principle of Principles

( or Why the Mother Church Bible Lessons Cannot Take Your Consciousness Higher)

Let us get straight to the heart of the matter. Either Science is everything or Science is nothing. The Bible shows this by demonstrating spiritual laws through allegory, mathematics, real stories and myth to demonstrate science. It is a text book to show spiritual laws at work. Revered as a book of metaphysical demonstration.

The Bible however during the course of history has been kidnapped on one side by literalists who use it as a rule book of a tyrannical God and others who claim to be mystics, dropping hints about saints, spirits, holy water and superstitious nonsense which the media then use for manipulation. (could also be said about Art).

Pythagoras said that all things can be reduced to Mathematics to be understood better. Not to disarm a principle but simply for Scientific research and to see the thing outside human emotion.

Scholars often did this with the Bible but hid their work from the Catholic Church for fear of punishment in Church history. After the Reformation, these scholars in the protestant tradition proposed certain biblical mathematics. This knowledge existed in most protestant churches, and freemasonry but always remained hidden for fear of persecution. It is doubtful that even today numerical knowledge of a system in the Bible would be embraced by religious thinkers as it requires a complete redefinition of what religion is.

In Mrs Eddy’s time it was very fashionable to code numbers into Art, She tried this with Christ and Christmas as well as a James Gilman picture of a CS service but quickly reversed her decision as she didn’t want people to come to the system via mathematics and formulae. She only wanted to demonstrate its workings. You can still see traces of this around the original Edifice such as Mother’s Room window which has a seven pointed star shining in the window with words “seeking and finding” two words with seven letters each.

Using Bible mathematics, her system was ultimately developed around numbers 7 and 4 . So we see 16 chapters of the text book, 7 hymns by Mrs Eddy etc etc…. This does not men she was using an occult system of knowledge, it may only have been used to classify her system but out of mathematics came a Principle which needs to be followed to completion mathematically.

There is no great hidden knowledge about this, it has been written out and charted by John Doorly and Max Kappeler, both of whom were ex-communicated by the Mother Church for publishing their findings. It simply adds another dimension to our understanding and a mature look at this is nothing to be afraid of or to question. Its simply how she developed her system.  Recently more overly complex charts have appeared which for mathematicians is fine. Mary Baker Eddy said her system would be further studied when humanity was ready.

This information however has implications for the way we study and view  CS in order to bring in the new knowledge that increasingly is made available:

This information about mathematics has been used by certain parties to blame the Board of Directors because there is an opinion that this information is likely in the archives of the Mother Church and was not revealed at any point. I disagree. I think the Board simply do not know anything about it.

Here’s why:

The Bible Lessons line up with this system: studying six sections which culminate on the last seventh day (on the seventh day he rested) where the student is left in the presence of God. lining up with the seven days of creation, seven hymns seven synonyms etc. The board of directors changed the rules in the 1980s allowing lessons to be of any length (many independent groups also don’t realise and continue writing their lessons incorrectly). This immediately meant the basis of operation of Divine Law could not be expressed through them as they simply don’t work mathematically, as they are no longer faithful to the mathematical principle. (“The Angel is denied” if you want it in religious terms) I doubt this was deliberate as it is spiritual suicide. There are probably many other points have changed as well, which would explain the rapid decline in the cs denominational movement.

Bearing in mind that the Board of Director´s views swing between Empire and Sentimentality, I doubt they would be very interested anyway even if they did start to examine mathematical structure.

So there we have it: our Beloved Dear Principle.

Today´s Texts

The Bible

John 3:5 “except a man be born of water and spirit he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God”

Science  and Health

“the supremacy of Spirit was the foundation on which Jesus built” (s and h 138:14-15)

Principle of Spirit – To read more about how this works in our lives you can read a booklet by Peggy M  Brook (John Doorly´s Secretary) Here

This Bible saying can look like some embrace of materialism but water in our textbook is defined as “the elements of Mind” (s and h 507:3)

Exactly how the Christ works in our life as a power drawing us to higher thought is something Artists have been working with for centuries. That moment of “aha”.

The two schools.

In CS, since the beginning, two schools of the practice emerged about how we should observe The Christ in our lives. Mrs Eddy knew about this but refused to deal with it institutionally perhaps because the difference is fine and has the same result, although it has major implications for speed of progress. Stanley C Larkin tried to address this with the Mother Church (the details are all on the site below) years later however they felt it was a simple matter of history which is irrelevant today but it is relevant, since these ideas pervade our thinking and tells us more about how thinking in the Mother Church changed as the “Chicago” idea moved to Boston upon the death of Annie Knott.

You can read more about it here http://www.endtime.org/2schools/2schools.html.

Example 1: a sick person approaches the practitioner and is told “It is God’s unfoldment in your life which will take you higher. Look for the good such as the spiritual qualities of care.

Example 2: a sick person approaches a practitioner and is told “its an illusion, get up”.

I think both are acceptable if we look at them as different phases of growth but I don’t see how example 1 can work in our lives well because we are giving power to the very thing we try to displace. The first one may also give an indication that you may die before you reach a higher thought. Not what you want to hear when you seek healing. There is some strange sense of personalisation here. I have seen mainly Independent Practitioners use it but it often begins with the personal self, working up to God. Of course this is not what’s meant, its what’s implied by the language.

The other troubling thing is the focus on unfoldment not on God but on the process.

Point 1 also takes us into chaos theory. where everything is ok because we are “working it out” but neither Jesus or Mrs Eddy took time to heal people over days. It was sudden. Having said all of this the healing in example 2 could be argued to be only faith in the practitioner.

I suppose it could be argued that both examples are showing Spirit, both are demonstration, so is there really an issue?

CS Bible Lesson Adam and Fallen Man 13 May 2018

Golden Text:  Jeremiah 15:1

Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people”

Responsive Reading: John 2: 13-25

13 And the Jews’ passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables;

16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.

17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

18 Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?

19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?

21 But he spake of the temple of his body.

22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.

24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,

25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.
Section 1

The Bible

Jeremiah 2:28, 2:31,

28 But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.

31 O generation, see ye the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?

Science and Health

283:21-30

This false belief as to what really constitutes life so detracts from God’s character and nature, that the true sense of His power is lost to all who cling to this falsity. The divine Principle, or Life, cannot be practically demonstrated in length of days, as it was by the patriarchs, unless its Science be accurately
stated. We must receive the divine Principle in the understanding,
and live it in daily life; and unless we so do, we can no more demonstrate Science, than we can teach and 30 illustrate geometry by calling a curve a straight line or a straight line a sphere.

Section 2

The Bible

Isaiah 66:12-14

12 For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled upon her knees.

13 As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

14 And when ye see this, your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall flourish like an herb: and the hand of the Lord shall be known toward his servants, and his indignation toward his enemies.

Science and Health

441: 10-24

The plea of False Belief we deem unworthy of a hearing.Let what False Belief utters, now and forever, fall into oblivion, “unknelled, uncoffined, and unknown.” According to our statute, Material Law is a liar who cannot bear
witness against Mortal Man, neither can Fear arrest Mortal  Man nor can Disease cast him into prison. Our law refuses to recognize Man as sick or dying, but holds him to be forever in the image and likeness of his Maker. Reversing the testimony of Personal Sense and the decrees of the Court of Error in favor of Matter, Spirit decides in favor of Man and against Matter. We further recommend that Materia  Medica adopt Christian Science and that Health-laws,
Mesmerism, Hypnotism, Oriental Witchcraft, and Esoteric Magic be publicly executed at the hands of our sheriff, Progress.

Section 3

The Bible

Matthew 26:69-75

69 Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee.

70 But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest.

71 And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.

72 And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.

73 And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee.

74 Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.

75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

Science and Health

517:15-24

The world believes in many persons; but if God is personal, there is but one person, because there is but one God. His personality can only be reflected,
not transmitted. God has countless ideas, and they all have one Principle and parentage. The only proper symbol of God as person is Mind’s infinite ideal.
What is this ideal? Who shall behold it? This ideal is God’s own image, spiritual and infinite. Even eternity can never reveal the whole of God, since there is no limit to infinitude or to its reflections.

Section 4

The Bible

Matthew 17: 1-8

And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,

And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.

And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.

And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.

Science and Health

527 11-20

Here the metaphor represents God, Love, as tempting
12 man, but the Apostle James says: “God cannot be
tempted with evil, neither tempteth He any
man.” It is true that a knowledge of evil would
15 make man mortal. It is plain also that material
perception, gathered from the corporeal senses, constitutes
evil and mortal knowledge. But is it true that God,
18 good, made “the tree of life” to be the tree of death to His
own creation? Has evil the reality of good? Evil is unreal
because it is a lie, — false in every statement.

Section 5

The Bible

John 8 42-47

Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.

43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.

44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.

46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?

47 He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

Science and Health

475:5-27

Question. — What is man?
6 Answer. — Man is not matter; he is not made up of
brain, blood, bones, and other material elements. The
Scriptures inform us that man is made in
9 the image and likeness of God. Matter is
not that likeness. The likeness of Spirit cannot be so
unlike Spirit. Man is spiritual and perfect; and be12
cause he is spiritual and perfect, he must be so understood
in Christian Science. Man is idea, the image, of
Love; lie is not physique. He is the compound idea of
15 God, including all right ideas; the generic term for
all that reflects God’s image and likeness; the conscious
identity of being as found in Science, in which man is
18 the reflection of God, or Mind, and therefore is eternal;
that which has no separate mind from God; that which
has not a single quality underived from Deity; that which
21 possesses no life, intelligence, nor creative power of his
own, but reflects spiritually all that belongs to his Maker.
And God said: “Let us make man in our image, after
24 our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish
of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle,
and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that
27 creepeth upon the earth”

The Bible

Acts 7:54-60

54 When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,

58 And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.

59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
